To attract more manufacturers in the Rs 740 crore Agrotextiles market, Synthetic and Arts Silk Rseach Association (SASMIRA) has suggested that the Centre provide subsidy only to certified products, so that genuine products can reach the market and farmers.

With the agro-textile market expected to grow at an average of 10 per cent per annum, there was tremendous scope for development of agro-textiles,like fishing nets, agro-shade net, crop protection net and shade fabrics, Sushmita, a senior scientist in SASMIRA , told reporters.

Sushmita, here to attend a seminar on 'protective agro textiles, advantages and future prospects,' said that by developing agro-textiles like ground covers, the industry could tap the vast potential, to prevent the 10 to 40 per cent crop production loss in India, due to anticipated rise in temperature in another five decades.

SASMIRA, recognised by the Government as Center of Excellence in Agro textiles, wants to become a world class leading service driver and research based International technical textile association to serve the industry in general and the agriculture sector in particular, she said.

Sushmita said wide varieties of agro textile products are available and selection of suitable type of products depends on crop protection, she said selection was greatly influenced by the geographical location. At some areas, it was used to protect plantation from excessive sunlight, while in others it was expected to protect the plant from severe cold.
