Cut Resistant Textiles – Factors Influencing Performance

Mechanicalproperties of fibres viz. tensile modulus, tenacity, elongation are the keyperformance indicators of cut resistance besides yarn and fabric structure. P-aramidand UHDPE (Ultra High Density Polyethylene) based high performance fibres aremost commonly used for protection against mechanical risks. Speciallyengineered yarns and fabrics with enhanced cut resistance are being developedfor specialized applications.


Thispaper gives some insight on influence of fibre composition, area density and structureconfiguration on the performance of cut resistant textiles made from Kevlar(p-aramid). The cut resistance value (Force 20mm) as per ISO 13997 varies from400 g to 500 g for different fabrics. Whereas a breathable a three tier,breathable engineered laminate (BOP ) developed using Kevlar knit fabric andfoam showed a 20% increase in cut resistance value. To read more,
